During the height of the Second World War, the composition of the United States five-cent piece underwent a dramatic transformation. This 1944 specimen from the Philadelphia Mint is struck in a special wartime alloy containing 35 percent silver, a departure from the traditional copper-nickel blend. It stands as a brilliant representative of this historic emergency coinage. The obverse features the classic left-facing portrait of Thomas Jefferson. Surrounding his profile are the familiar inscriptions of faith and freedom, reading IN GOD WE TRUST and LIBERTY, alongside the 1944 date. On the reverse, Jefferson's historic Virginia home, Monticello, is depicted in intricate detail. This particular coin has been awarded the Full Steps designation, indicating that the steps of the mansion are exceptionally well-defined and sharply struck. Above the dome, a prominent P mint mark signifies its origin in Philadelphia, positioned above the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. The inscriptions FIVE CENTS and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA frame the lower half of the design. Graded Mint State 66, this coin offers an extraordinary look at wartime numismatic craftsmanship.
