1944-P Silver Wartime Jefferson Nickel BU
During the height of the Second World War, the composition of the United States five-cent piece underwent a temporary transformation. To conserve critical industrial metals for the war effort, the traditional nickel alloy was replaced with a unique blend containing 35 percent silver. This 1944-P Jefferson nickel, preserved in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, represents a fascinating chapter in American emergency coinage. The obverse of this historic coin displays the profile of Thomas Jefferson, facing left. Accompanying his portrait are the familiar inscriptions of national identity, including the phrases indicating trust and liberty. The reverse features Monticello, Jefferson's beloved Virginia estate. To distinguish these silver-alloy issues from standard nickels, the mint placed a large, prominent letter P above the dome of Monticello, marking its origin at the Philadelphia Mint. This striking placement of the mint mark was a first in United States coinage history.
