1950-D Jefferson Nickel BU
In 1950, the Denver Mint struck a remarkably small number of five-cent pieces, making this specific issue a standout within the mid-century Jefferson nickel series. With a total production of just 2,630,030 coins, this Denver-minted issue represents one of the lowest mintage figures in the entire run of the series, sparking immense curiosity among numismatic enthusiasts. The obverse features a profile portrait of Thomas Jefferson, designed by Felix O. Schlag. Accompanying the third president's likeness are the familiar inscriptions "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "LIBERTY," alongside the 1950 date. On the reverse, Schlag's detailed depiction of Monticello, Jefferson's historic Virginia estate, takes center stage. The reverse design also features the traditional motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and the face value "FIVE CENTS" above "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA." The distinctive "D" mint mark is positioned to the right of the building, indicating its origin at the Denver facility.
