1950-D Jefferson Nickel MS-65 PCGS
The mid-century era of United States coinage produced some remarkable treasures, none more famous among five-cent pieces than the 1950-D Jefferson Nickel. Struck at the Denver Mint, this particular issue is highly regarded due to its exceptionally low mintage of just 2,630,030 pieces. Finding one preserved in a superb certified grade of Mint State 65 (MS-65) offers a wonderful glimpse into the past, showcasing the coin as it looked when it first left the coining press. The obverse of the coin features a classic left-facing portrait of Thomas Jefferson. Surrounding his likeness are the traditional American inscriptions, including the national motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" along the left rim, "LIBERTY" on the right, and the clear "1950" date. The design is clean, balanced, and emblematic of mid-twentieth-century American currency. On the reverse, the coin depicts Monticello, Jefferson's historic Virginia estate. The building is rendered with fine architectural detail, accompanied by the inscription "MONTICELLO" directly beneath it. The reverse also displays the Latin motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" at the top, while the denomination "FIVE CENTS" and the country name "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" frame the lower portion. The distinctive "D" mint mark is positioned to the right of the historic home, confirming its origin at the Denver facility.
