1953 Jefferson Nickel PF-68 Cameo NGC

0.0000 troy oz 1953 PF-68 (NGC)

In 1953, the United States Mint produced a limited run of proof coins, including a small mintage of just 128,800 nickels. Among these, an incredibly small number achieved the exceptional PF-68 Cameo designation. This grade highlights a striking visual contrast, where the frosted, raised details of the design stand out in bold relief against highly reflective, mirror-like fields. The obverse features the classic profile of Thomas Jefferson, surrounded by the traditional inscriptions of LIBERTY and the date 1953, alongside the national motto IN GOD WE TRUST. Designed by Felix O. Schlag, this mid-century issue captures the third president in elegant detail. On the reverse, Schlag's detailed depiction of Monticello, Jefferson's Virginia estate, takes center stage. The building is framed by the inscriptions E PLURIBUS UNUM above and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA below, with the denomination of FIVE CENTS clearly struck. This certified specimen represents a peak of preservation for mid-century American coinage.
