In 1953, the Philadelphia Mint produced a limited run of just 128,800 proof Jefferson Nickels. Strikingly preserved, this particular five-cent piece has achieved an extraordinary PF-69 grade, representing a level of preservation that is incredibly close to flawless. Because it was struck in Philadelphia, the coin bears no mint mark, a traditional characteristic of the facility's output during this era. The obverse features the classic profile of Thomas Jefferson, accompanied by the familiar inscriptions "LIBERTY" and the date "1953" on the right, with the national motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" on the left. On the reverse, Jefferson's historic Virginia home, Monticello, is depicted in sharp detail. The inscriptions "E PLURIBUS UNUM", "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", and the denomination "FIVE CENTS" frame the architectural illustration, creating a beautifully balanced mid-century design.
