In 1954, the Philadelphia Mint produced a limited run of proof Jefferson nickels, totaling just 233,300 pieces. Striking proof coins required polished dies and planchets, resulting in a level of detail and mirror-like brilliance far superior to standard circulating coinage. This particular specimen has achieved an extraordinary Proof 67 grade, indicating a coin preserved in nearly flawless condition with minimal imperfections from the minting process. The obverse of the coin features the classic profile of Thomas Jefferson, facing left. The familiar mid-century American mottos are clearly legible, with the words of trust and freedom flanking the portrait alongside the date of production. On the reverse, the design showcases Monticello, Jefferson's historic Virginia estate, centered above the denomination and the national name. The traditional Latin motto of unity arches gracefully over the entire reverse scene, completing a design that remains a cornerstone of American pocket change.
