During the mid twentieth century, the Philadelphia Mint produced a limited run of proof coins, including a small mintage of 233,300 special five-cent pieces in 1954. These coins were struck using polished dies and planchets to achieve a level of detail and reflectivity far superior to the nickels destined for daily commerce. Because they did not bear a mint mark, their origin at the Philadelphia facility is recognized by the clean field where a mark would otherwise sit. This particular specimen has survived in extraordinary condition, earning a certified grade of Proof 68 (PF-68). At this level of preservation, the coin exhibits virtually flawless surfaces, showcasing the sharp contrast of the mid-century design. The obverse features the familiar profile of Thomas Jefferson, accompanied by the legible inscriptions of liberty and trust. On the reverse, the historic home of Monticello is depicted alongside the traditional national mottos, preserving a crisp snapshot of American numismatic artistry from 1954.
