During the mid-century era, the Philadelphia Mint produced exceptional examples of the five-cent denomination, including this stunning 1956 Jefferson Nickel. Struck in a copper-nickel composition, this coin is preserved in Gem Proof condition, which highlights the sharp details and mirror-like surfaces achieved through specialized manufacturing techniques. The obverse presents a profile portrait of Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States. Surrounding his likeness are the inscriptions "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "LIBERTY", alongside the date of 1956. This side of the coin was designed by Felix O. Schlag, who captured a dignified representation of the early American statesman. On the reverse, Schlag depicted Monticello, Jefferson's famous Virginia estate. The neoclassical plantation home is rendered with fine architectural detail, accompanied by the inscriptions "E PLURIBUS UNUM", "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", "FIVE CENTS", and the name of the estate itself, "MONTICELLO". This reverse design serves as a tribute to Jefferson's architectural legacy and remains a classic staple of American pocket change.
