The year 1959 marked a major milestone for the United States one-cent piece. While the obverse retained the classic right-facing portrait of Abraham Lincoln designed by Victor David Brenner, the reverse underwent its first major design change in fifty years. This coin introduced the detailed depiction of the Lincoln Memorial, a design by Frank Gasparro that would remain a staple of American pocket change from 1959 all the way through 2008. This particular specimen is a proof issue, struck with specially prepared dies and planchets to achieve a mirror-like finish. Out of a total proof mintage of 1,149,291 pieces for the year, this coin has survived in an extraordinary state of preservation. It has earned a grade of Proof 69 Red, indicating it is nearly flawless and retains its original, vibrant copper coloration. The reverse design showcases the newly introduced monument, accompanied by the traditional inscriptions of the denomination and the nation's name, alongside the motto of national unity.
