1960 Lincoln Cent PF-69 NGC (Red, Small Date)

0.0000 troy oz 1960 PF-69 (NGC)

In 1960, the United States Mint produced a subtle variation in its minor coinage that continues to captivate numismatists. This particular proof cent showcases the sought-after Small Date variety, struck with exceptional precision. Preserved in an extraordinary proof state and graded Proof 69, this copper coin displays a vibrant red coloration, indicating it has retained its original mint brilliance without the typical darkening or spotting that often affects vintage copper. The obverse of the coin presents the classic right-facing portrait of Abraham Lincoln, a design originally created by Victor David Brenner. On the reverse, the coin features the Lincoln Memorial, a design by Frank Gasparro that served as the standard reverse for the penny from 1959 to 2008. Legible inscriptions on the reverse include the denomination ONE CENT, the country UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and the traditional motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. This specimen is one of 1,691,602 proof cents minted during that year. Finding a proof coin from this era in such a high tier of preservation offers a wonderful glimpse into the mid-twentieth-century minting process, where the polished dies and planchets produced sharp, mirror-like fields and frosted details.
