In 1961, the Denver Mint struck this copper-nickel five-cent piece, now preserved in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. The coin represents a classic era of mid-century American pocket change, displaying sharp details that are often lost to decades of circulation. On the obverse, a profile portrait of Thomas Jefferson faces left. This side is framed by the familiar national mottoes, with "IN GOD WE TRUST" on the left and "LIBERTY" on the right, accompanied by the 1961 year date. The reverse side of the coin features Monticello, the famous Virginia estate of Thomas Jefferson. The building is rendered in fine detail, showing the dome and classical portico. Surrounding this central image are the inscriptions "E PLURIBUS UNUM" above, while "MONTICELLO," "FIVE CENTS," and "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" are arranged below. A small "D" mint mark is positioned to the right of the building, indicating its origin at the Denver coinage facility. Both sides of this coin were designed by Felix O. Schlag.
