1961 Jefferson Nickel Gem Proof

0.0000 troy oz 1961 Gem Proof

During the mid-century era, the Philadelphia Mint produced exquisite proof coins that elevated everyday circulating designs into works of numismatic art. The 1961 Jefferson Nickel is a stunning example of this craftsmanship, struck with polished dies that bring out the sharpest details of its classic imagery. The obverse of the coin presents a profile portrait of Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States. Surrounding his likeness are the familiar inscriptions "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "LIBERTY", alongside the 1961 date. Because this issue was struck at the Philadelphia Mint, it does not bear a mint mark, keeping the focus entirely on the clean fields and crisp details. On the reverse, the design showcases Monticello, Jefferson's famous Virginia estate. The Neoclassical mansion is rendered in fine detail, centered above the inscriptions "FIVE CENTS" and "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA". The traditional motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" arches gracefully over the top, completing a design created by Felix O. Schlag that remains a beloved staple of American pocket change.
