During the mid-twentieth century, United States coinage combined clean, modern production techniques with classic architectural and portrait designs. This 1962 five-cent piece is a striking representative of the era, preserved in an exceptional proof state. Having earned a grade of Proof 68, this particular specimen displays the crisp details and polished finishes characteristic of carefully prepared proof strikes. The obverse of the coin presents a profile portrait of Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States. Surrounding his likeness are the familiar inscriptions of liberty and national faith, with the word LIBERTY and the date 1962 positioned on the right, while the motto IN GOD WE TRUST curves along the left border. On the reverse, the design features a detailed depiction of Monticello, Jefferson's famous Virginia estate. The name of the home, MONTICELLO, is clearly inscribed beneath the building. Surrounding this central vignette are the traditional national legends, including E PLURIBUS UNUM at the top, and the denomination and country name, FIVE CENTS and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, framing the bottom.
