1970-S Jefferson Nickel Gem Proof

0.0000 troy oz 1970 Gem Proof

The 1970 Jefferson nickel struck at the San Francisco Mint represents a beautiful example of modern United States proof coinage. Crafted with polished dies, this five-cent piece showcases a striking contrast between its frosted design elements and deeply reflective fields, a hallmark of the Gem Proof designation. On the obverse, the coin displays a classic left-facing portrait of Thomas Jefferson, the nation's third president. This side features the traditional inscriptions of LIBERTY and the year 1970, alongside the national motto IN GOD WE TRUST. The tiny initials FS honor the artist, Felix O. Schlag, who designed the coin. The reverse of the coin is dedicated to Monticello, the historic Virginia estate designed by Jefferson himself. The detailed depiction of the neoclassical mansion is accompanied by the inscriptions MONTICELLO, FIVE CENTS, and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Above the dome of the home, the Latin phrase E PLURIBUS UNUM completes the design, celebrating national unity.
