1979-P SBA BU (Near Date)
In 1979, the United States introduced a new dollar coin honoring Susan B. Anthony on the obverse, designed by Frank Gasparro. This particular Brilliant Uncirculated issue from the Philadelphia Mint features the notable "Near Date" variety, where the year is positioned closer to the coin's border than on other versions. The obverse displays a strong profile of Anthony, accompanied by the classic motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" and the year 1979. The Philadelphia mint mark is located just behind her neck. On the reverse, Gasparro adapted the famous Apollo 11 insignia to commemorate the historic moon landing. The design depicts an eagle carrying an olive branch as it descends toward the lunar surface, with the Earth visible in the background. This side is inscribed with "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM," and the face value "ONE DOLLAR," creating a powerful visual bridge between American social history and space exploration.
