In 1979, the United States introduced a smaller format for its dollar coin, departing from the traditional large-sized cartwheels of the past. This issue, struck at the Philadelphia Mint as indicated by the P mint mark located behind the portrait neck, presents a bold aesthetic shift in American coinage. The coin is preserved in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, showcasing the original mint luster and sharp details of its historic design. The obverse features a profile of Susan B. Anthony, designed by Frank Gasparro. This portrait marked a significant moment in coinage history, celebrating the famed social reformer. Surrounding her likeness are the inscriptions LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST, along with the 1979 date. Gasparro also designed the reverse, which features a detailed adaptation of the Apollo 11 insignia. An eagle carrying an olive branch is depicted landing on the surface of the moon, with the Earth visible in the distance. This side bears the national motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, along with the legends UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and ONE DOLLAR, celebrating both peaceful ideals and humanity's reach into space.
