1979-S Susan B. Anthony Dollar BU
In 1979, the United States introduced a new, smaller dollar coin that broke traditional design barriers. This Brilliant Uncirculated piece from the San Francisco Mint features the portrait of social reformer Susan B. Anthony on the obverse, designed by Frank Gasparro. The coin's front also displays the year 1979, the word LIBERTY, and the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. The small 'S' mint mark is located behind the subject's neck, indicating its origin at the San Francisco facility. On the reverse, Gasparro adapted the famous Apollo 11 insignia to create a striking space-themed design. It depicts an eagle landing on the surface of the moon while clutching an olive branch. This celestial scene is accompanied by the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the denomination, ONE DOLLAR. Together, these elements make the coin a fascinating study in modern American numismatic design.
