The 1979-S Susan B. Anthony dollar holds a special place in modern American numismatics, particularly because of a subtle change in the minting process at San Francisco. Collectors distinguish this specific coin by its scarce Type II mint mark, which is positioned on the obverse behind the portrait. Unlike the less defined Type I mark, the Type II variety displays a remarkably crisp and neat letter S with distinct, open loops and rounded serifs. On the obverse, the coin presents a profile of Susan B. Anthony, surrounded by the inscriptions LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the 1979 date. The reverse features an adaptation of the famous Apollo 11 insignia, a design originally created for the Eisenhower dollar. It depicts an eagle carrying an olive branch as it lands on the surface of the moon, with the Earth visible in the distance.
