The five-cent piece struck in 1980 at the Philadelphia Mint offers a wonderful glimpse into mid-twentieth-century American coinage design. This particular specimen survives in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, meaning it retains the original luster and sharp details from the day it was minted, free from the wear of everyday commerce. On the obverse, the coin displays a profile portrait of Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States. Accompanying his likeness are the traditional inscriptions of liberty and national trust, along with the 1980 year of production and the small letter P indicating its Philadelphia origin. The reverse side features Monticello, the famous Virginia estate of Jefferson. The neoclassical building is rendered with clean lines, showing the dome and portico in clear detail. Surrounding this architectural vignette are the required national mottos and denominations, including the phrase denoting one out of many, the name of the estate itself, and the face value of five cents.
