The 1980-S Susan B. Anthony dollar represents a distinctive era in United States coinage, offering a smaller alternative to the traditional large silver-colored dollars of the past. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, this particular issue is a brilliant gem proof, showcasing the sharp contrast and mirror-like surfaces characteristic of specialized collector strikes. On the obverse, the portrait of social reformer Susan B. Anthony faces right, surrounded by the word LIBERTY, the national motto IN GOD WE TRUST, and the 1980 date. The small S mint mark is positioned just behind her neck, indicating its origin in San Francisco. This side of the coin was designed by Frank Gasparro. Gasparro also designed the reverse, which features a detailed adaptation of the historic Apollo 11 mission insignia. An American eagle clutching an olive branch is depicted landing on the surface of the moon, with the planet Earth visible in the background. This design, inherited from the previous Eisenhower dollar series, is encircled by the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the denomination ONE DOLLAR.
