The 1981 Jefferson nickel, struck at the Philadelphia Mint, stands as a clean, bright example of modern American pocket change. This five-cent piece is preserved in brilliant uncirculated condition, showcasing the original mint luster and crisp details as they emerged from the coining press decades ago. The obverse of the coin displays a profile portrait of Thomas Jefferson, designed by Felix O. Schlag. Alongside the presidential likeness, the familiar national motto IN GOD WE TRUST is clearly legible, framing the left side of the coin's face. On the reverse, Schlag's detailed rendering of Monticello, Jefferson's historic Virginia home, takes center stage. The building is accompanied by the traditional inscriptions MONTICELLO, FIVE CENTS, and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, while the classic Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM arches above the estate.
