The 1983 Lincoln Cent represents an intriguing era in modern American minting. Struck with a composition of 99.2 percent zinc and a thin 0.8 percent outer layer of copper, this issue represents the early years of the transition away from traditional bronze alloy. Because of this change, these early zinc cents often display unique minting characteristics, such as tiny bubbles or raised dots beneath the copper plating, making each surviving specimen a fascinating study in metallurgical history. On the obverse, the familiar bust of Abraham Lincoln faces right, a classic portrait created by designer Victor David Brenner. The legible inscriptions include the traditional mottos of liberty and trust, alongside the 1983 date. The reverse, designed by Frank Gasparro, depicts the Lincoln Memorial, a design utilized by the mint from 1959 to 2008. This side features the national denomination and the Latin motto of unity. Weighing 2.5 grams, this coin has been preserved in brilliant uncirculated condition, retaining its original red luster. It serves as an excellent example of how changes in coin composition can affect the final appearance of a circulating coin over time.
