1989 Lincoln Cent BU (Red)

0.0000 troy oz 1989 Brilliant Unc

The 1989 Lincoln Cent represents a fascinating chapter in modern American coinage, showcasing a brilliant red luster in its uncirculated state. While earlier pennies were primarily copper, this issue features a composition of 99.2 percent zinc with a thin outer coating of 0.8 percent copper. This specific metallurgical blend, introduced to manage production costs, weighs exactly 2.5 grams. Collectors and observers often notice unique surface characteristics on these early zinc cents, such as tiny raised dots or bubbling where the copper plating reacted during the minting process. The obverse features the classic right-facing bust of Abraham Lincoln, originally created by Victor David Brenner. Legible inscriptions on this side include the timeless motto IN GOD WE TRUST, the word LIBERTY, and the date 1989. Because this coin was struck at the Philadelphia Mint, it bears no mint mark. On the reverse, the Lincoln Memorial design by Frank Gasparro is rendered in sharp detail. This design was minted from 1959 to 2008, celebrating the president's legacy with a miniature depiction of his monument. Surrounding the memorial are the traditional inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, the Latin phrase E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the denomination ONE CENT.
