In 1991, the San Francisco Mint struck a special clad half dollar to celebrate the fifty-year milestone of the Mount Rushmore National Memorial. This coin features a composition of copper and nickel bonded to a core of pure copper, finished with the sharp details and mirrored fields of a proof strike. The obverse side, created by Marcel Jovine, presents a detailed perspective of the iconic mountain sculpture. On the reverse, artist James Ferrell chose to depict a majestic American bison, a symbol deeply tied to the American West. The reverse design also features the words GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY alongside the traditional national mottoes, marking five decades of the monumental South Dakota carving.
