1994-P Jefferson Nickel Matte Finish SP-69 PCGS (Full Steps)
In 1994, the Philadelphia Mint produced a highly unusual variation of the classic five-cent piece. Rather than the typical reflective surfaces of standard coinage, this specific Jefferson nickel features a distinct matte finish. This satin-like texture was achieved through a specialized minting process where the coin dies were sandblasted, and each blank was struck twice to bring out the finest details of the design. The obverse of the coin displays the familiar left-facing portrait of Thomas Jefferson, accompanied by the inscriptions "LIBERTY" and "In God We Trust," along with the 1994 date and the "P" mint mark. On the reverse, Jefferson's Virginia home, Monticello, is depicted alongside the traditional mottos "E Pluribus Unum" and "United States of America," with the denomination spelled out as "FIVE CENTS." This particular specimen is graded SP-69, indicating a nearly flawless strike. It also carries the coveted Full Steps designation, which means the steps on the base of Monticello are fully defined and exceptionally crisp. With a mintage of only 167,703 pieces, this coin represents the second lowest mintage for any mint-state Jefferson nickel produced between 1938 and 2009. It was never released for general circulation, but was instead distributed exclusively by the United States Mint within a specialized Coin and Currency Set.
