The 1997-D Lincoln Cent represents a modern chapter in one of the longest-running coin designs in United States history. Struck at the Denver Mint, this coin displays a brilliant uncirculated finish with its original red luster. While predominantly made of zinc (99.2 percent) with a thin copper plating (0.8 percent), the coin retains the classic metallic appearance of its predecessors, weighing in at exactly 2.5 grams. The obverse features the iconic right-facing bust of Abraham Lincoln, a design by Victor David Brenner that has graced the penny for generations. Legible inscriptions on this side include the national motto IN GOD WE TRUST, the word LIBERTY, the year 1997, and the D mint mark representing the Denver facility. On the reverse, the Lincoln Memorial is depicted in detailed relief, a design by Frank Gasparro that was minted continuously from 1959 to 2008. The reverse inscriptions clearly display UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, the traditional Latin phrase E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the denomination ONE CENT.
