1997 Lincoln Cent BU (Red)

The 1997 Lincoln Cent stands as a bright example of modern American pocket change, preserved in brilliant uncirculated condition with its original red luster. While many associate the penny entirely with copper, this issue actually consists of a zinc core, specifically 99.2 percent zinc, coated with a thin layer of 0.8 percent copper. Weighing exactly 2.5 grams, this composition has been the standard for the denomination since the early 1980s. The obverse of the coin features the iconic right-facing bust of Abraham Lincoln, a legendary design created by Victor David Brenner. Surrounding the portrait are the familiar inscriptions of LIBERTY, the motto IN GOD WE TRUST, and the date of 1997. Because it was struck at the Philadelphia Mint, it bears no mint mark beneath the date. On the reverse, the Lincoln Memorial design by Frank Gasparro is showcased in crisp detail. This particular reverse design was minted continuously from 1959 to 2008, making it one of the most recognized images in United States coinage. It includes the national motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, the name of the issuing nation UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and the denomination ONE CENT.
