The Washington quarter first entered circulation on August 1, 1932, replacing the previous Standing Liberty design. This introduction was timed to honor the 200th anniversary of George Washington's birth, establishing a classic motif that would endure for decades. While early versions of this denomination were struck in silver, the metallic makeup shifted following the Coinage Act of 1965. Modern examples, such as this 1998 issue, are composed of a copper core clad in a cupronickel alloy. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, this 1998-S coin is a Gem Proof specimen, showcasing the exceptional detail and polished fields characteristic of the proof minting process. The obverse features the familiar left-facing portrait of George Washington, accompanied by the inscription of the word LIBERTY, the national motto IN GOD WE TRUST, the year 1998, and the distinct S mint mark. On the reverse, a majestic eagle with outspread wings serves as the central focus. Surrounding the bird are the traditional inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, the denomination of QUARTER DOLLAR, and the Latin phrase E PLURIBUS UNUM.
