2003-P 1st Flight Centennial 1/2 Dollar Clad Proof (Box & COA)

0.0000 troy oz 2003 Proof

In 2003, the United States Mint commemorated a monumental milestone in human aviation with a special half dollar. This clad proof coin honors the centennial of the Wright brothers' historic achievement, marking exactly 100 years since they accomplished the first manned, powered flight on December 17, 1903, near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, the obverse of this copper-nickel coin depicts the Wright Monument, which stands at Kill Devil Hill near the site of their historic takeoff. This landmark serves as a lasting tribute to the determination and ingenuity of the two brothers. The reverse design captures the legendary moment of triumph itself. It features the Wright 1903 Flyer soaring through the air with Orville Wright on board, while Wilbur Wright watches from the ground below. The reverse also bears the traditional national inscriptions, including the country of issue, the denomination of half dollar, and the phrase E PLURIBUS UNUM.
