In 2003, the Philadelphia Mint released a special clad half dollar to mark a century of human achievements in the skies. This commemorative coin celebrates the monumental moment on December 17, 1903, when humanity first achieved manned, powered flight in the skies near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. The obverse side of the coin features a detailed depiction of the Wright Monument, which stands atop Kill Devil Hill near the site of the historic launch. This monument serves as a lasting tribute to the determination and innovation of the Wright brothers. On the reverse, the design captures the historic 1903 Wright Flyer in mid-air during its inaugural flight. The scene depicts Orville Wright piloting the aircraft while Wilbur Wright watches from the ground below. This coin contains no silver content and was issued in a Brilliant Uncirculated finish with a mintage of 57,122 pieces.
