2003-S Lincoln Cent Gem Proof (Red)
The 2003-S Lincoln Cent represents a modern continuation of one of America's most enduring coin designs. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, this particular issue is a Gem Proof specimen, showcasing highly polished surfaces that create a striking contrast against the frosted details of the design. Composed of 95 percent copper with the remaining 5 percent made of tin and zinc, this copper cent displays a rich red coloration characteristic of carefully preserved proof strikes. The obverse of the coin features the historic right-facing bust of Abraham Lincoln, a portrait created by designer Victor David Brenner. Clearly legible inscriptions surround the president, including the national motto IN GOD WE TRUST to the top, LIBERTY to the left, and the date 2003 accompanied by the S mint mark to the right. On the reverse, the Lincoln Memorial is depicted in detailed relief, a design by Frank Gasparro that served as the standard reverse for the penny from 1959 to 2008. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and ONE CENT frame the monument, while the traditional Latin phrase E PLURIBUS UNUM is positioned directly above the roofline. This proof coin offers observers a chance to appreciate the fine architectural lines of the memorial design in its optimal physical form.
