Struck by the United States Mint, this five dollar gold piece serves as a commemorative tribute marking one hundred years since the devastating 1906 San Francisco earthquake. The coin shares the exact physical specifications of the traditional gold half eagles that circulated in America up until 1929, containing 0.2419 troy ounces of gold. The front of the coin displays a detailed depiction of the historic Old Mint building, a design originally created by Sheri J. Winter for a commemorative San Francisco Mint medal. Legible inscriptions on this side include LIBERTY, the dual dates of 1906 and 2006, and references to the earthquake and fire centennial. For the reverse, designers revived a classic American motif. It features the majestic eagle design that originally graced the reverse of the Liberty Head Half Eagle, complete with the traditional motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. This particular specimen is certified in exceptional Proof 69 Deep Cameo condition, representing one of just 44,174 pieces minted.
