The 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle stands as a remarkable achievement in modern minting, bringing a long-held artistic vision into the twenty-first century. Struck at the West Point facility from one troy ounce of 0.9999 fine gold, this twenty-dollar coin is distinguished by its unusual thickness. At 4 millimeters thick, the planchet was specially prepared to support the dramatic depth of the ultra high relief design. This modern release traces its origins back to experimental pieces from 1907. In December 1906, the original concept was first presented to President Theodore Roosevelt. To bring the vision to life, mint engraver Charles Barber and Henri Weil crafted hubs for experimental strikes. These early trials, produced in diameters of 27 millimeters and 32 millimeters, were created specifically to test how many blows of the coining press were necessary to fully bring out the details of the high relief design. The obverse of the coin features a powerful depiction of Lady Liberty striding forward, illuminated by the rays of the sun while holding a torch and an olive branch. The reverse displays a bald eagle soaring through the air, accompanied by the inscriptions United States of America, Twenty Dollars, and In God We Trust. This specific certified specimen has been graded Mint State 70 (MS-70) Prooflike.
