Struck in 2014, this impressive five-ounce silver coin celebrates the natural grandeur of the Great Smoky Mountains, a major sub-range of the Appalachian Mountains that straddles the border between North Carolina and Tennessee. Established in 1934, the national park is famous for its characteristic blue mist, a natural fog that hangs over the ridges and inspired the name of the region. The reverse side of this coin features a detailed scene of a traditional log cabin nestled deep within the forest. Above the trees, an eagle glides through the air, with the rolling peaks of the Great Smoky Mountains rising in the distance. The inscriptions on this side include the name of the park, the state of Tennessee, the year 2014, and the traditional motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. On the obverse, the coin displays the classic portrait of George Washington. The surrounding text identifies the issuing nation as the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, alongside the inscriptions LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the denomination of QUARTER DOLLAR.
