In 2014, the United States Mint continued its celebrated America the Beautiful Quarters Program with a stunning tribute to the natural wonders of Colorado. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, this copper composition coin is a Gem Proof issue, meaning it was crafted with polished dies and blanks to achieve a sharp, mirror-like finish that highlights every detail of its design. The reverse of the coin transports the viewer to the Great Sand Dunes, a landscape established as a national monument in 1932 and later designated a national park in 2004. The artwork depicts a man and a child playing on a creek bed, framed by the towering, wind-swept dunes behind them. This side is inscribed with the words GREAT SAND DUNES, COLORADO, 2014, and the traditional motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. On the obverse, the coin features the classic portrait of George Washington. Surrounding this familiar image are the essential inscriptions of American coinage, including UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the denomination, QUARTER DOLLAR. The small S mint mark is also visible, signifying its origin at the San Francisco facility.
