The America the Beautiful Quarters Program brought a fresh perspective to United States coinage, celebrating natural treasures across the nation. In 2015, this series honored Kisatchie National Forest, a sprawling wilderness designated in 1930 that holds the distinction of being the only national forest in the state of Louisiana. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, this particular coin is a Gem Proof specimen, showcasing the high level of detail achievable through the proof minting process on a composition of 75 percent copper and 25 percent nickel. The reverse of the coin features a dynamic wildlife scene, capturing a wild turkey in mid flight as it soars over a landscape of Louisiana long leaf pine trees. This natural imagery is framed by the inscriptions KISATCHIE, LOUISIANA, 2015, and the traditional motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. The design brings the unique ecosystem of the Southern pine forests to life in a small, circular canvas. On the obverse, the coin bears the familiar portrait of Liberty, accompanied by the classic inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and LIBERTY. The denomination QUARTER DOLLAR is clearly marked, alongside the S mint mark, which denotes its origin from the San Francisco Minting facility.
