Struck at the San Francisco Mint, this 2015 clad quarter honors the Homestead National Monument of America in Nebraska. The coin is composed of a copper core bonded to an outer layer of copper-nickel, resulting in a seventy-five percent copper and twenty-five percent nickel alloy. It features a brilliant proof finish, highlighting the intricate details of its dual-sided artwork. The front of the coin displays the traditional profile of George Washington, originally created by John Flanagan and later modified by William Cousins. The reverse side illustrates the fundamental necessities of pioneer survival: a log cabin, a water pump, and ears of corn, representing shelter, water, and food. This design commemorates the Homestead Act of 1862, a historic law that granted 160 acres of western land to individuals who committed to living on and improving the property. This landmark legislation remained active for over a century before its repeal in 1976.
