The 2016 Denver Mint quarter celebrates the Cumberland Gap, a natural break in the Appalachian Mountains that served as a critical pathway for Native Americans and early settlers pushing westward. Established as a national historical park in Kentucky in 1940, this strategic pass also held great importance during the Civil War. This coin represents the second release of the 2016 America the Beautiful series. The reverse of the coin features a detailed depiction of an early frontiersman gazing out across the historic mountain pass. Inscriptions on this side include "CUMBERLAND GAP," "KENTUCKY," "E PLURIBUS UNUM," and the year "2016." The design captures the spirit of exploration and the physical gateway that allowed travelers to cross the formidable mountain barrier. On the obverse, the coin displays the classic portrait of George Washington, a design created by John Flanagan.
