This 2016 quarter from the Denver Mint, struck in brilliant uncirculated condition, honors Fort Moultrie, a historic defensive site nestled in Charleston Harbor. Initially recognized as a national monument in 1948, this location served as a critical early battleground during the American Revolutionary War. The fort itself was named to honor Colonel William Moultrie, and the site later became a central focus of conflict in 1860 when South Carolina seceded from the United States. Today, the preserved structures have been carefully restored to represent the various historical eras of its active military service. The reverse of the coin features a dramatic scene depicting Sergeant William Jasper as he braves an assault by a British vessel to retrieve a fallen flag. Surrounding this dynamic illustration are the inscriptions FORT MOULTRIE, SOUTH CAROLINA, 2016, and the traditional motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. On the obverse, the familiar portrait of George Washington is accompanied by the mint mark D, indicating its production at the Denver facility. The front of the coin also displays the standard inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the denomination of QUARTER DOLLAR.
