The 2016-S Jefferson Nickel represents a modern continuation of one of America's most enduring coin designs. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, this five-cent piece is presented in Gem Proof condition, a designation that highlights the sharp contrast and mirror-like finishes achieved through specialized minting processes. The obverse of the coin displays a forward-facing likeness of Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States. This portrait is accompanied by the inscriptions "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "Liberty," alongside the year 2016 and the "S" mint mark. This modern depiction of Jefferson offers a fresh perspective on the traditional coinage portraiture. On the reverse, the coin features a detailed depiction of Monticello, Jefferson's historic Virginia estate. The legendary home is framed by the inscriptions "E PLURIBUS UNUM" above and "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" below. The denomination "FIVE CENTS" and the name "MONTICELLO" are also clearly struck, completing a design originally created by Felix O. Schlag.
