In 2018, the Denver Mint struck a beautiful copper quarter celebrating the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. This release represents the forty second entry in the expansive fifty six coin America the Beautiful series. Established in 1970, this protected area spans more than 60,000 acres at the northernmost point of Wisconsin, encompassing twenty one islands and a scenic stretch of mainland shoreline. The park is celebrated for its ancient forests, diverse wildlife habitats, dramatic sandstone sea caves, and a collection of eight historic lighthouses scattered across six of its islands. The reverse side of this coin showcases a detailed depiction of the Apostle Islands, capturing the essence of this unique northern sanctuary. The inscriptions on this side include the name of the site, "APOSTLE ISLANDS", the state name "WISCONSIN", the year "2018", and the traditional motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM". On the obverse, the coin displays the classic portrait of George Washington. This side features the familiar inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", "LIBERTY", "IN GOD WE TRUST", and the denomination "QUARTER DOLLAR". A distinct "D" mint mark is visible, indicating its production at the Denver facility.
