2018-D Native Amer $1 - Jim Thorpe BU
2018-D Native Amer $1 - Jim Thorpe BU
The 2018 Denver Mint Native American dollar presents a powerful tribute to one of the most versatile athletes in sports history. This brilliant uncirculated coin continues the long-running series celebrating the contributions of Native Americans to the story of the United States, focusing this issue on the incredible achievements of Jim Thorpe. On the obverse, the familiar portrait of Sacagawea carrying her infant son, Jean Baptiste, remains the central focus. This side carries the traditional inscriptions of liberty and trust. The reverse design shifts the spotlight to Thorpe, depicting him alongside elements that represent his triumphs in both professional football and the Olympic Games. His native name, Wa-Tho-Huk, which translates to Bright Path, is inscribed alongside his English name and the country of issue. Rather than cluttering the main faces of the coin, the United States Mint placed several key inscriptions along the edge. Turning the coin reveals the year 2018, the D mint mark representing the Denver facility, and the traditional motto E PLURIBUS UNUM incused along the rim.
