In 2018, the United States Mint continued its expansive America the Beautiful series with a tribute to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. This release represents the forty-second entry in the fifty-six coin program, celebrating a unique sanctuary situated at the northernmost edge of Wisconsin. Established as part of the national park system in 1970, this protected region encompasses twenty-one distinct islands alongside a scenic stretch of mainland coast. The area is celebrated for its striking sandstone sea caves, ancient forests, diverse wildlife habitats, and a historic collection of eight lighthouses scattered across six of the islands. The reverse of this copper quarter captures the essence of the Apostle Islands, depicting a scenic view of the lakeshore. On the obverse, the familiar profile of George Washington, originally created by John Flanagan, stands out in sharp detail. Surrounding the presidential portrait are the traditional inscriptions of "United States of America", "Liberty", "In God We Trust", and the denomination of "Quarter Dollar". Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this brilliant uncirculated coin carries the "P" mint mark on its obverse. The reverse also displays the year of issue, 2018, the location name, the state of Wisconsin, and the national motto "E Pluribus Unum". This coin serves as a miniature window into one of the most picturesque and historically rich aquatic landscapes in North America.
