In 2019, the United States Mint reached a major milestone in its America the Beautiful series with its fiftieth release. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint with a 'P' mint mark, this quarter dollar features a copper core bonded with a copper-nickel outer layer, presenting a brilliant uncirculated finish that highlights a dramatic wilderness landscape. The reverse of the coin transports viewers to the rugged heart of Idaho, depicting a boater navigating the rushing waters of the Salmon River. Towering cliffs, dense pine trees, and massive mountains frame the scene, capturing the raw energy of the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness. This vast protected area, established by Congress in 1980 and renamed four years later, honors Senator Frank Church for his pivotal role in championing both the Wilderness Act of 1964 and the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act of 1968. The Central Idaho Wilderness Act of 1980 originally set aside this region to safeguard its pristine peaks, diverse wildlife, and free-flowing waters. On the obverse, the classic portrait of George Washington anchors the coin. The traditional inscriptions 'United States of America', 'Liberty', 'In God We Trust', and 'Quarter Dollar' surround the bust, while the reverse displays the legends 'RIVER OF NO RETURN', 'WILDERNESS', 'IDAHO', '2019', and 'E PLURIBUS UNUM'.
