In 2019, the West Point Mint struck a distinctive quarter dollar celebrating one of the most rugged natural sanctuaries in the United States. This release marks the fiftieth entry in the fifty-six coin America the Beautiful program. Struck with the 'W' mint mark, this brilliant uncirculated piece features a clad composition consisting of a pure copper core bonded to an outer layer of copper and nickel. The reverse side of the coin captures the raw energy of the Idaho wilderness, depicting a lone boater piloting a craft through the turbulent rapids of the Salmon River. Towering rock faces, dense pine forests, and distant peaks frame the scene, capturing the spirit of the massive protected area established by Congress in 1980 and renamed four years later. This vast wilderness preserve safeguards pristine mountain ranges, local wildlife populations, and the rushing river itself. On the obverse, the familiar profile of George Washington graces the center. Surrounding the presidential portrait are the traditional inscriptions confirming its status as official United States currency, including "United States of America", "Liberty", "In God We Trust", and the "Quarter Dollar" denomination.
