The American Innovation Dollar series celebrates the spirit of ingenuity by honoring significant creators and groundbreaking concepts from each state. Released in the chronological order of statehood at a pace of four designs annually, this particular dollar coin shines a spotlight on the musical traditions of Kentucky. On the reverse side, the design showcases a banjo with the words "Kentucky Bluegrass" written across its face, paying tribute to the acoustic genre that grew from the region. The obverse features a side profile of the Statue of Liberty, accompanied by the traditional national motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" and the face value of "$1". A small, stylized gear privy mark is also integrated into the front design. Crafted at the San Francisco Mint, this proof coin features edge-incused lettering that carries the year 2022, the "S" mint mark, and the phrase "E PLURIBUS UNUM". Rather than precious metal, the coin is composed of a pure copper core bonded to outer layers containing copper, zinc, manganese, and nickel.
