Dating from 353 to 294 BC, this ancient silver tetradrachm originates from the historic region of Attica, Athens. It represents one of the most recognizable and enduring coin designs of antiquity, surviving through the centuries to offer a direct connection to the ancient Greek world. This particular specimen has survived in extraordinary Mint State condition, preserving the crisp details of its classical artistry. The obverse of the coin displays the right-facing profile of Athena, the patron goddess of Athens, adorned in an ornate helmet. On the reverse, her companion owl stands facing right, positioned within a distinct incuse square. Beside the owl, a small crescent moon and an olive sprig bearing two leaves are visible, alongside the Greek letters A O E, which identify the city-state of Athens.
