Near East or Egypt AR Tetradrachm c.5th-4th Cen. BC XF NGC
During the fifth to fourth centuries BC, the influence of Athenian currency spread far beyond the borders of Greece. This silver tetradrachm, weighing 16.63 grams (approximately 0.5346 troy ounces of silver), represents a fascinating chapter in ancient commerce. Rather than being minted in Athens, this piece was struck by Egyptians as a regional trade coin, mimicking the highly trusted Athenian design to facilitate local and regional transactions. The obverse of this silver coin features the profile of Athena looking to the right. She wears a crested Attic helmet decorated with a spiral palmette on the bowl and three olive leaves above the visor. A round earring featuring a central boss is also visible on her ear. This classic depiction was the universal symbol of Athenian authority, replicated here by Egyptian artisans to ensure the coin's acceptance among merchants. On the reverse, an owl stands three-quarters to the right with its head turned directly toward the viewer. Tucked behind the owl are a crescent moon and an olive sprig, all set within an incuse square. The Greek letters "A O E" are inscribed alongside the owl. This specific coin has been certified as Extra Fine, with a strike rating of 5 out of 5 and a surface rating of 2 out of 2. It also bears a historical test cut, a common practice in antiquity where merchants sliced into the metal to verify that the coin was solid silver throughout rather than a plated counterfeit.
