Mistakes in the minting process can produce some of the most visually striking pieces in numismatics. This copper-nickel five-cent piece, a dramatic example of a Jefferson Nickel error, was struck 85 percent off-center. Because the planchet was severely misaligned with the dies during production, the date was completely lost, leaving behind a highly unusual and abstract metal canvas. On the obverse, instead of a centered image, only a partial portrait of Thomas Jefferson remains visible, pushed to the very edge of the coin. The partial inscription "OD WE TRUST" can be read along the rim, a fragmented remnant of the traditional motto. The reverse side is similarly offset, showing only a portion of Monticello, Jefferson's famous Virginia estate. This dramatic shift highlights the mechanical force of the coining press, transforming a common circulating denomination into a captivating study of minting anomalies.
